General InformationBicycle rentBicycles can be rented at most railway stations and throughout the city. A deposit of NLG 100 is required. The rent starts at NLG 10 per day.Parking facilitiesThe Congress Centre has its own indoor car park situated under the Congress Centre with a total of 800 parking places. Tickets should be bought before leaving the Congress Centre and cost NLG 15 per day/per entrance (price level 1997). If you wish to leave your car overnight, please check with the doorman.ClimateThe average midday temperature in August is about 21° C, but may vary between 17°C and 25°C. Evening and nights are about 16°C. Rain always remains a possibility in our coastal climate. Both raincoat/umbrella and a sweater are always a wise precaution.Mail and TelefaxDuring the Conference, mail for participants can be forwarded to the general address of the Amsterdam RAI. Please always state clearly to whom the message is addressed and the name of the Conference. Postal, telephone and fax services are available at the service desk of the Congress Centre. Telephone and faxnumber of the congress centre will be given upon registration to the congress.Passport and Visa informationA valid passport is required for entry into The Netherlands. No visa is required for travellers with passports from the European Union, the United States, Canada or Australia. Visas may be required for those with passports from other countries. For specific information, please contact the Dutch Embassy nearest to you at least six weeks prior to your departure for The Netherlands.Personal InvitationThe organisers will be pleased to send a letter of invitation to any person requesting one. It is understood that such an invitation is intended to help potential delegates in raising travel funds or in obtaining visa. The letter of invitation is not a commitment on part of the conference to provide any financial support. You may request personal invitation letters from the conference secretariat.Final ProgrammeThe Final Programme will be handed out to each registered participant with the registration packet.InsuranceIt is highly recommended that all participants carry the proper travel and health insurance, as the 64th IFLA General Conference and Congrex Holland bv cannot accept liability for any accidents or injuries that may occur at the meeting.Credit CardsAll major hotels and most restaurants and shops accept credit cards. It is advisable to carry an identity card or any form of photo identification.ShoppingIn Amsterdam shops are generally open during the week from Monday to Saturday from 9.00 to 18.00 hours, and in the city centre also on Sunday from 12.00 to 17.00 hours. On Thursday evenings the shops are open until 21:00 hours.ElectricityElectricity is supplied at 220V.Professional Congress OrganisersCongrex Holland bv has been appointed as Professional Congress Organiser. The Congrex Partnership is an international group of Professional Conference Management Companies with offices in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific.International Trade ExhibitionIn connection with the IFLA ‘98 General Conference, an international trade exhibition will be arranged at the Amsterdam RAI International Exhibition & Congress Centre. The exhibition, that will run simultaneously with and at the same location as the conference, is open to all companies and organisations with porducts and services related to the library filed.
