World Library and Information Congress: 71st IFLA General Conference and Council"Libraries - A voyage of discovery"August 14th - 18th 2005, Oslo, Norway Social and Cultural ActivitiesA varied programme of social and cultural events is planned for the delegates attending the 71st IFLA Council and General Conference. There will be musical entertainment by singer/songwriter Kari Bremnes, whose records have been released in many countries. The official opening by His Majesty the King and excerpts from the opening show directed by Kjersti Alveberg will be shown on the big screen. Refreshments. Cultural EveningTuesday, 16 August 2005, 18.30 - 21.30 hrs The Cultural evening will take place at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History on 16 August. At the Museum - the IFLA delegates can experience and learn about traditional Norwegian culture and history. The Open-Air Museum features 155 authentic buildings from different national regions. A variety of activities will take place in the Open-Air Museum this evening, the buildings will be open and with guides, folk music and dancing, demonstration of traditional arts and crafts. Food and drinks will be served. Buses will take the delegates to the museum and back again. (Bus schedule to be found in the Programme Book.) On Wednesday 17 August there is a selection of different receptions for the delegates. The delegates will be given an invitation to one of the receptions if they have registered. This general invitation must be exchanged at the Information Desk in the Spektrum for a special invitation on a first come first serve basis to one of the three receptions available. Embassy Receptions (by invitation)Wednesday, 17 August 2005 IFLA NIGHTSPOT!Every night, but note different opening hours: 14-17 August There will be an IFLA NIGHTSPOT in the late evenings during the conference for the delegates. Come meet your colleagues and taste some of the Norwegian cultural scene! Here famous Norwegian authors will present and discuss their work. Well-known Norwegian journalist and correspondent Eva Bratholm will interview the authors. After the session with the authors we will also have a concert with different bands every night, lead by Saxophonist and composer Trygve Seim. After completing his degree at Trøndelag Music Conservatory in 1992, Trygve Seim rapidly became established as a key musician on the Norwegian jazz scene. He was one of the founders of the jazz groups The Source and Airamero, and also became a member of the renowned ensemble 'Oslo 13' (at that time lead by Jon Balke) which Seim later became a co-leader of when Jon Balke left the group. With Trygve Seim's two records as a leader on the German record label ECM, he has also established himself as an important composer and musician on the European jazz scene. Both his ECM-records ("Different Rivers" from 2001 and "Sangam" from 2004), plus his concerts throughout Europe, has received significant acclaim in the international press and for his first record, Different Rivers, Seim received the prestigious "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik - Jahrespreis", awarded annually by German music critics. The venue "Stratos" is in the centre of town with a magnificent view of Oslo. If weather permits, the outdoor terraces are open! Please consult the map for details on the location. Jostein Gaarder. In 1991, when Jostein Gaarder wrote Sofies verden (Sophie's World), he believed that a novel on the history of philosophy would appeal only to a specialist readership. In 1995 Sofies verden was the most sold novel in the world. To date Sofies verden has been translated into 50 languages and has sold over 25 million copies. An unknown number of pirate editions also exist. Jostein Gaarder's other works, both his children's books and adult novels such as Kabalmysteriet, I et speil, i en gåte, Vita Brevis and Sirkusdirektørens datter, have proved hugely popular and been published in a host of countries. Thomas Hylland Eriksen is Professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo and the author of numerous books on anthropological and cultural issues, including "Small Places, Large Issues" and "Tyranny of the Moment". From 1993 to 2001 he was affiliated with the Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture at the University of Oslo. Trygve Seim Orchestra is the ensemble playing "Sangam" and "Different Rivers". The ensemble consists of 6 wind blowers, violincello, accordion and drums and features a.o. the wellknown trumpeter Arve Henriksen.
Eirik Newth holds a master's degree in theoretical astrophysics. Since 1990 he has been working fulltime as a translator and writer on natural science for a broad audience. Eirik Newth has written more than 250 articles and published 17 books, of which several have been translated into various languages. He is widely used on radio and television, and is an eager webpublisher with a personal blog. Marit Nicolaysen who debuted as a short-story writer, wrote her first novel in 1985. She has subsequently published a collection of short stories and two books for young adults. Her nine books for children featuring Svein and his pet rat Halvorsen have all enjoyed immense success. The film company Maipo are now producing a movie based on the first four novels on Svein. The 10th novel on Svein and Halvorsen will be launched in September 2005. The Source and Lars Klevstrand
Åsne Seierstad is a graduate in Russian, Spanish and philosophy from the University of Oslo. As a war correspondent, she covered the conflicts in Iraq (2003) and Afghanistan (2001) for the Scandinavian press and media. She worked for NRK news from 1998 to 2000 and covered the war in Kosovo in 1999, among other things. Seierstad has received a number of national and international prizes for her journalism, and published several books including "The Bookseller of Kabul", "A Hundred and One Days" and "With Their Backs to the World". Thorvald Steen has published a wide range of novels, plays, collections of poems, books of short stories, children's books and essays. He has distinguished himself as one of Norway's leading internationally-oriented writers. His Norwegian breakthrough came in 1992 with a cycle of poems, Ilden (The Fire) and shortly afterwards he achieved international recognition with his creative historical novels Don Carlos (1993), Giovanni (1995), Constantinople (1999) and The Little Horse (2002). Steen's work is translated into 17 languages. Trygve Seim trio Trygve Seim/Tora Augestad/Lars Andreas Haug Tora Augestad is trained from e.g. the Norwegian State Academy of Music. She specialized in cabaret singing focusing on Hanns Eisler, Kurt Weil and Bertolt Brecht but also performs in a number of genres, contemporary music, classical, opera and musicals. Lars Andreas Haug graduated from the jazz department at the Norwegian State Academy of Music. He has toured and recorded with his own trio - Trio Trang. He just released a new solo cd that should not be missed! Trygve Seim has done concerts with both musicians as a duo, but this the first time they perform together as a trio. They will play Weill and Eisler as well as their own compositions.
Linn Ullmann is a graduate of New York University, where she studied English literature and began work on her Ph.D. She returned to Oslo in 1990 to pursue a career in journalism. She had established herself as an important literary critic when her first and critically acclaimed novel Before You Sleep was published in 1998. Her second novel, Stella Descending (2001) received glowing reviews. Her third novel Grace was published in 2002 and won the prominent literary award "The reader's prize" in Norway and was named one of the ten best novels of that year by the prestigious newspaper "Weekendavisen" in Denmark. Lars Fr. H Svendsen is Doctor of philosophy, teaching at the University of Bergen. He is the editor of Norwegian Philosophical Journal and the author of numerous books, including "The Philosophy of Boredom" (Kjedsomhetens filosofi, 1999), now translated into 14 languages, and "Fashion" (Mote, 2004), about the relationship between fashion, modernity and human identity. The Source with Cikada String Quartet The Cikada ensemble was founded in 1989 and is considered one of Europe's leading contemporary music groups. The ensemble recently received the prestigious "Nordic Council Music Prize Award 2005". In the addition to the whole ensemble (nine musicians pluss conductos Christian Eggen), Cikada also consists of smaller ensembles, among them the Cikada String Quartet. The Source started its collaboration with Cikada String Quartet in 1995 and released their first album together in 2002; "The Source and Different Cikadas".
