Call for Papers

Acquisition and Collection Development Section

Theme: Collection description Models – Next Generation Initiatives

Over recent decades libraries have developed numerous cooperative collection development schemes on the consortial, regional and even national levels. Libraries have collaborated on acquisition and collection development profiles. Various tools have been developed to describe collections and in identifying strengths and weaknesses in collections, e.g. Conspectus. Yet many of these schemes have not been fully successful.

During the last few years collection description has gained a renewed topicality. The time may well be ripe for new openings: the need for cooperative collection development is bigger than ever. New tools have emerged to describe collections and new standards (e.g. Collection description specification – NISO Z39.91-200x) have been developed to guarantee interoperability. Many practical projects are going on around the world.

The IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development Section invites proposals for papers on next generation initiatives in collection description and assessment for the section’s open session at the Durban Conference. The 2-hour open session will feature 3-4 invited papers.

Proposals should include a title and a 200-400 word abstract and relevant biographical information of author(s) / presenter(s). Papers must not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

The submission deadline is 15 February 2007. Successful proposals will be identified by 15 March 2007. Full papers are due from speakers by 15 May 2007. Papers should not be longer than 20 pages.

The paper should be in one of the IFLA languages. If not written in English, an English translations should be attached.

Please note that all expenses and fees, including registration for the conference, travel, accommodation etc. are the responsibility of the author(s) or presenter(s) of accepted papers.

Abstracts should be sent to:
