Library Buildings and Equipment Section

Theme: Toolkits for successful library design: guidelines and case studies

Libraries are facing a period of great change as the demand grows for flexible access to resources and user have ever higher expectations in regard to library services. This has a major impact on the design of new buildings which need to be highly attractive and practical spaces often playing a major role in the regeneration of their surrounding areas. In the year that the Library Buildings & Equipment Section publishes its international guidelines on library design, the open session will explore the role and value of toolkits for design and look at examples of best practice.

Speakers should address:

the importance of the briefing process in designing new library buildings
how librarians and architects work in partnership to achieve the best possible end result
approaches to design based on best practice and guidance

It should be stressed that all papers presented at the session in Durban should address aspects of library buildings and design and not library services or functionality.

An abstract of approximately 400 words plus information on the author should be submitted by 15th January 2007.

The abstracts will be reviewed and identified by 31st January and authors will be notified by the end of February 2007.

Full papers must be submitted no later than 30th April 2007.

Papers should be between 10 and 20 pages, including illustrations. There will be a maximum of twenty minutes for presentations of papers at the open session in Durban.
